At this level, it's all about sportsmanship
Took a trip out to see my cousin's twins play baseball today after a long day of working from my easy chair. I of course was working from home due to a massive sunburn earned Saturday while I was out at the 27th annual News-Herald Track & Field Championships, but that's a tale for another time.
Today it was all about watching the boys' play baseball. Little did I realize that at this level, which is one up from t-ball where they have a machine pitching to the kid's that it's more a social day for the kid's and parent's that a baseball game.
First off, they only get to play three innings, and each batter gets six pitches, making it odd if it's your first time seeing the game played this way. I'm not saying it's wrong, just that I'm not used to it.
The team that the twin's were on had at least 12 kids, while the team they were playing had six. Odd when they let them all play at once, it surely wasn't 'fair' when it came to fielding, but ultimately it's all about teaching the kids to play, and be good sports, not winning and losing.
The twins team is now 3-0. Their little sister starts playing on her team next week. I can't wait to get out to one of those games too.
Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers, oh my
Well they certainly aren't the version of these characters that I grew up with. I don't like the bastardization of my childhood memories.
Shame on whoever came up with these. There is enough 'sexy' done in other genre's you don't need to try to corrupt my memories.Don't get me wrong, I'm all for freedom of choice, and freedom of expression, but there are still limits that people should put on themselves.
Not everything needs to be sexed up just because it can be.

Happy Mother's Day
My mother is one of the strongest women I know. She's had to put up with a lot during her life, but she always did right by me.
When I was growing up, we didn't have a lot of money, but I rarely wanted to anything. Especially after my parents divorced, mom had to work a lot just to keep our meager roof over our heads, but she still rarely missed a football game (despite me rarely playing after junior high.), and she never missed a wrestling meet. She was also there for track meet's, though as a thrower my events were over after less than 20 minutes. Through all of that she never complained and was always there for me.
That's why my mother is so special, she is an amazingly strong woman, that was dealt a bad hand but didn't let it get her spirits down.
I took her out for dinner last night, and bought her a few trinkets, neither of which are enough to even begin to pay her back for all that she did for me.

CAUGHT IN THE WEB: Happy Mother’s Day, and other stuff
Last week we bid adieu to Rene Cizio, a cherished colleague and friend, but that didn’t stop us from doing our thing on the Web. We have lots of new content and features to further enhance your experience at TheNewsHerald.com.
First off, happy Mother’s Day from our bloggers to you. We have a wonderful group that has decided to blog about mothers in honor of moms everywhere. I’ve read most of them myself already, and they are outstanding. By the time you read this, I’ll have my own ode to my mother up on my blog, as well; so check it out at ”Confessions of a 20-Something Manchild,” in the Life section of our site.
Speaking of bloggers, we have several new blogs coming to you that have been added in the last week. Sports blogs about all of the professional teams in Detroit, as well as a NASCAR blog and an outdoors blog. We also have added three new entertainment blogs that will totally cover the world of pop culture. Make sure to check out “The World According to Mandy,” written by Mandy Lee; “Pop Watch,” written by Bill Ewald; and “I’m Sure I Was Making Some Kind Of Point,” by David Scanlan. All three are excellent choices that you can’t go wrong taking the time to read.
Fans of my blog will recognize Scanlan as the third member — the second being fellow “Dave,” News-Herald staffer David Komer — of the Davey Awards voting panel from a series of February posts where we picked the winners and losers of the past year in the movie industry. Scanlan also will be an occasional guest host on “Culture Cast,” which is the podcast that I co-host with Komer. The other two entertainment blogs are new faces to our site, but both spin excellent stories about anything and everything pop culture related.

In other Web news, a cool new feature we added enhanced the ease with which you can share stories to your favorite social media sites. You now can easily share to sites like Blogger, Google+, Pinterest, Tumblr and others in addition to still being able to share to Facebook and Twitter with ease. Basically, if there is a social network out there you belong to, you now can easily share your favorite content to that site.
Another cool thing that happened this week was when one of the Dearborn Press & Guide’s bloggers, Wendy Fichter, who happens to be an Allen Park resident, was in the office getting help with her blog earlier this week. While she was here, she mentioned that she had been to the opening of the TechShop in Allen Park last weekend, and that she recorded the ribbon-cutting ceremony. We had a photographer there, but hadn’t gotten the video, but Fichter was more than happy to share with us, so we could bring it to you.
The ribbon was not made of cloth, but steel. Instead of a giant pair of scissors to snip it in two, the ribbon-cutters — Randy Visintanier, director of Ford Motor Co. research and innovation, and U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-15th District) — donned safety goggles and used a plasma cutter. It’s pretty cool stuff.

Xbox 360 just got cheaper
I currently pay $60 for a year of that service, so the system isn't really getting any cheaper, it's just a marketing ploy to get some extra play out of the system late in it's life, and also to put more Kinect units in homes so they can sell more games that require that unit.
Nice try Microsoft, but I see right through you...
It's actually not a bad deal for people on a budget though.

May the fourth be with you, always!
It's the best time of the year for my geekly readers, first off, who could have come up with a better time to release the Avenegers than on Star Wars day? It's a brilliant move for, even if it was probably unintentional.Of course that also means that for the first time in longer than I can remember, I won't be watching a Star Wars flick on May 4. Thanks to work, and then the Avengers, I just won't get the time to get away. I hope you can all forgive my sins. There just isn't a way for me to get out of work tomorrow, short of say cutting off a toe...

Avengers Assemble
Less than 27 hours from the premiere, and yes I am excited.
Avengers Assemble!
At last, after years of fervent anticipation, we can all commence with fully unfettered geeking. A team of Earth's Mightiest Heroes is here to save us from cinematic drudgery, led by Team Captain (okay, or writer/director) Joss Whedon, a man who knows his way around both a comic book and a witty script.
THE AVENGERS gathers superheroes from the best Marvel movies of the past few years: Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and introducing Mark Ruffalo's brand new take on The Incredible Hulk. The trailer is spectacular. The cast is phenomenal. Joss Whedon is in charge! I find it impossible to believe that this movie will be anything less than brain-meltingly transcendent.
Get excited. THE AVENGERS are coming.
