My name is Dave Herndon, ever since my homeworld of Gallifrey was time locked I've been just travelling the cosmos, then they invented comic books, and cartoons. “Max: The Inebriated Rabbit” is like a dirty version of “Fritz the Cat.”
Yes you read that correct, a dirty version of Fritz.
It’s offensive, it’s crude, in a nutshell it’s perfect.
We are first introduced to Max at the tail end of a 5-day bender where he did enough blow and booze to make Charlie Sheen blush. That said, all he really wants is to get his girlfriend Ophelia a gift for her birthday.
That’s how he ended up with the cash to start the bender, that’s why he ended up on the bender. Disregard the booze, the hooker and the rest, at its heart this is a love story.
Max just doesn’t know how to show his love, so instead he self-sabotages.
It’s a strong debut from writer/artist Erick Gutierrez, who you can tell pours his heart and soul into the story.
The only downside to this book, is that in the nature of independent comics, there isn’t more to consume right away.
I’ll be (not so) patiently waiting to buy a copy of issue two the second it’s available.
Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the upcoming 2015 crossover, Aliens / Vampirella, pitting the iconic horror heroine against the Xenomorphs popularized in eight feature films and numerous Dark Horse Comics series. Written by Corinna Bechko (Star Wars: Legacy, Savage Hulk), the sci-fi horror crossover marks the first time that the two comic book universes collide.
Writer Corinna Bechko says, "I've loved Alien since I first saw it as a kid on a crummy old TV in a well-lit room and got scared half to death anyway. Now that I have the chance to add a little corner to that universe I couldn't be happier. And pitting such an implacable horror against Vampirella? That's a meeting that definitely produces very fertile story-telling ground. The Alien franchise has always thrived with strong women in the lead. Smart, self-assured Vampirella is a joy to write for, even when she may have met her match."
"Aliens / Vampirella continues our string of successful crossovers with Dark Horse Comics. This is an incredible series -- featuring the iconic Vampirella against one of Fox's icons, Aliens -- and we're proud to have Corrina Bechko as the architect," says Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.
"When I first heard about the Vampirella / Aliens crossover, I thought to myself, 'How is this going to work?' But then I read Corinna Bechko's outline for the series, and all my doubts were dispelled," says Dark Horse V.P. of Publishing Randy Stradley.
Vampirella is a raven-haired heroine who remains, even after 45 years of publication, one of the comic industry's leading ladies, due in no small part to Dynamite Entertainment's stewardship of the character. Since Vampirella's very healthy resurgence in 2010, Dynamite has published two volumes of a monthly series, several miniseries and one-shot specials, and crossovers with multimedia brands and comic book peers. The Vampirella franchise is a haven for writers and artists with a penchant for the macabre.
For over twenty-five years, Dark Horse Comics has been the comic book home to the Aliens franchise, expanding upon the universe of terror first introduced in the 1979 Ridley Scott-helmed sci-fi/horror masterpiece. Featuring the nightmarish extraterrestrials as imagined by H. R. Giger, the Dark Horse comics have enjoyed unprecedented success in both the hobby and mass markets. Throughout the years, the Xenomorphs have interacted with many staples of the comic book industry, including Batman, Predator, Terminator, Judge Dredd, Superman, and Green Lantern.

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the upcoming July release of Bob's Burgers #1, the first issue in an ongoing series that presents all-new adventures and antics of the Belcher Family, the beloved cast of the popular FOX animated comedy series. Building upon the success of their five-issue 2014 miniseries, Dynamite and partner Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products welcome a creative team assembled from the actual television show producers and animators to deliver the engaging Belcher Family fun that millions of fans adore.
"Bringing Bob's Burgers to the comic book medium is a lot of fun, because it allows us to tell stories that we wouldn't normally do on the TV show and it allows our artists to illustrate them in equally unique styles," says Mike Olsen, one of the contributing writers for the Bob's Burgerscomic book series.
Loren Bouchard, the creator of Bob's Burgers, says, "We want the comic to appeal to fans of the show, and to that end, we strive to protect the tone, the heart, and most importantly, the characters, just as fiercely as we do when we're working on the TV show. If you enjoy the show and you don't enjoy the comic book, then we owe you a comic book, or at least an apology."
"We're very fortunate that Loren Bouchard and his creative team of writers and artists are able to take the time to create some of the best comics in the industry today. We wanted to wait to launch the ongoing series until Loren and his team were able to create enough material to do so, instead of continuing series of mini-series. Bob's Burgers has been successful thanks to the execution of Loren and his creative team. When you think about it, Bob's Burgers is the only television-based comic in the industry that has an entire team of show writers and artists working on the comic. It truly is canon," says Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.
The second-ever series of the Bob's Burgers comic book gives each member of the Belcher Family a chance to shine. Each monthly issue will include new installments of Tina's Erotic Friend Fiction, Louise's Unsolved Mysteries and Curious Curiosities, Gene's Rhymey Rhymes That Could Someday Be Songs, Linda's Attempts to Take a Nice Family Picture in Front of the Restaurant (And How It Always Goes Wrong), and Bob's Fantasy Food Trucks (If Money Were No Object).
The announcement of the ongoing Bob's Burgers series follows upon not only a bestselling 2014 miniseries, but the strong comic shop retailer support of Bob's Burgers as part of the worldwide Free Comic Book Day 2015 event. Taking place on Saturday, May 2nd, Free Comic Book Day will welcome fans of all ages to pick up copies of Dynamite's exclusive FCBD offering for the year, a special Bob's Burgers one-shot comic that's free for customers while supplies last. The inclusion of Bob's Burgers in this highly publicized annual event promises to attract the porgram's fans of all ages to comic shops -- fans that will be eager for more Bob's Burgers comics come July.
Bob's Burgers follows the ups and downs of Bob Belcher, who runs the family restaurant with the help of his wife Linda and their three kids, Tina, Gene, and Louise. Bob has big ideas about burgers, but his family falls short on service and sophistication. The show debuted in 2011, and airs Sunday nights. Numerous critics have applauded the series' offbeat sense of humor. The show was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, and was also a Critics' Choice Television nominee for Best Animated Series.
Bob Camp, the man directly behind the famed 90's comedy "The Ren and Stimpy Show", will be June 27-28 at the DeltaPlex Arena and Conference Center on June 27-28.
attending the GRASP Comic Expo on
Camp started his animation career as a designer for animated series such as "ThunderCats", "Silverhawks", "TigerSharks", and several other series produced by Rankin/Bass. He then worked as a designer on "The Real Ghostbusters" for DiC, and later as a storyboard artist on "Tiny Toon Adventures" for Warner Bros. Television.
Camp was a co-founder of and director for SpĂŒmcĂž, the animation studio that created "The Ren & Stimpy Show". He played a major role in the studio's creative force until September 21, 1992, when he left to work for Games Productions(a.k.a. Games Animation), the animation studio Nickelodeon initially created to continue work on the "The Ren and Stimpy Show" series after SpĂŒmcĂž had been fired. At Games, Camp was promoted to creative director of "The Ren and Stimpy Show" and supervised work on the episodes made.
In the 2000s, Camp worked as a storyboard artist on animated feature films such as Looney Tunes: Back in Action and Ice Age: The Meltdown. Camp was the storyboard editor for the 2015 hit film Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out Of Water.
"Bob is one of those rare guys in television history that doesn't just push the envelope on what is acceptable but also blows up the envelope and drops an additional atomic bomb on what is left over to make sure," said event director Mark Hodges. "Through this, Bob developed one of the most memorable group of characters of the 1990's and we are glad that he will be a part of our event."
In honor of the start of the presidential primary season, Bluewater Productions announced today the release of a biography featuring political powerhouse Rand Paul titled Political Power: Rand Paul. Bluewater is also announcing some other biography comic books for the 2016 election.
Dr. Rand Paul is the son of former presidential candidate and “intellectual godfather” of the Tea Party, Ron Paul, and considered in many circles to be the Republican’s nominee for President during the 2016 elections. Though his short time as the Senator of Kentucky hasn’t been without some controversy, Dr. Paul has made an indelible mark on politics. Political Power: Rand Paul. Will be released on April 15th.
Bluewater’s political slate for 2015/2016 will include those that announce their intentions to run for the presidency as well as those whose power influence the voting public’s choices for leaders. Titles scheduled for later this year include biographies of Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Elizabeth Warren, and more. They have already published biographies on potential 2016 candidates like Chris Christie, Joe Biden, and Hillary Clinton. An update to the previously released Hillary Clinton title, focusing on her time as Secretary of State, will see print soon.
Since, 2008, Bluewater’s publishing line has been addressing current events and releasing entertaining biographies of the men and women vying to become America’s next leaders, a fact which makes publisher and President Darren G. Davis proud. “Growing up, I was a reluctant reader. We hope to reach kids in similar situations that may be more apt to read when a comic book is placed in front of them,” said Davis. “I have guest taught in schools and found comic books to be an excellent way to reach children and young adults.” Davis also added that understanding the realm of politics may seem daunting to some. “It’s my hope that these informative and entertaining books teach readers about the candidates. Comic books have grown up; they’re not just for kids anymore.” Past subjects have included Michelle Bachmann, Barack Obama, Herman Cain, The Tea Party Movement, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin and more. Bluewater has also released one on Rand Paul’s father, Ron Paul.
Artist Joe Paradise, a graphic designer famed for his work drawing biography comics depicting the Dead Kennedys, Elvis Presley, Joan Jett and the Runaways, and more with Revolutionary Comics in the mid-1990’s, agrees with Davis’ assertion regarding the power of comic books. “If you ask me, political figures are more interesting than super heroes by a mile,” he explains. “The spandex crowd seems caught in a never-ending loop of revisiting stories that were written 50 years or more in the past - but our politicians are constantly inventing fresh new ways to shock, bewilder, confuse, and sometimes even inspire us, and I'm enjoying the hell out of documenting it all on the comic page.”
Writer Michael Frizell, an educator for Missouri State University and freelance writer, agrees. “Dr. Paul is a fascinating figure. As a writer, I always want to craft stories about people who hold strong convictions. His ties to family give readers a glimpse at his character, and his often-controversial stances make him an interesting person to depict in graphic format,” said Frizell. Understanding the impact such a book might have, Frizell added, “The research I needed to conduct was rigorous, as was the writing process. I needed to think like a storyteller and notate like a reporter.”

Satellite Klit with guest Chris Brown performs in the finals.
By Dave Herndon
Twitter @NHDaveH
It wasn’t pretty, that’s for sure. But as they say, a win is a win.
Saturday night there was a war in Toledo, the likes of which hadn’t been seen since that actual War of Toledo.
In the actual War, dozens of people gathered and yelled at each other, one man walked away with a black eye. There might have been more hate and vitriol spun Saturday night when “Satellite Klit,” deftly destroyed “Forbidden Taint” in a battle of the "Comic Book Creator Karaoke Battle of the Bands,” during the Fantasticon afterparty.
The Klits were the heavy fan favorites, boasting Toledo’s own Dirk Manning
amongst its ranks along with Tony Miello and dan Daugherty. The Taints, despite being the reigning world champs, and having a (wo)man advantage with “Kosmic” Kasey Pierce and her backup singers of Erick Gutierrez, John Marroquin and Chris Brown were the dogs.
Officiated by legendary ECW referee AT Huck, the match was equal parts wrestling, and something that sounded like the time I started my car with an opossum sleeping in the engine compartment.
The main event started with Huck giving everyone the pat down to make sure there were no foreign objects –aside from a few mixed drinks-- everyone was clean.
Up first in the battle were the Taints, though they quickly claimed sabotage when none of the wireless microphones worked.
What happened next must be experienced to be believed, so I leave you with the video of both team’s opening round performance.
Following the first round, Huck left the choice of winners up to the assembled crowd. Most were unable to vote, having passed out from the audio assault they had just heard, but those that did manage to stay conscious overwhelmingly picked the Klits as the winners by default.
After an intermission where singers that could actually carry a tune woke up the crowd, it was nearly time for round two.
Only there was one slight hitch, Chris Brown was nowhere to be found.
The Taints made a substitution, adding in the beautiful Hollie Ogden, who is neither a comic book creator nor retailer. She also wasn’t on either team’s pre-approved roster.
The performance was much improved though. I’ll leave it up to the listeners to decide which team they liked before we go on with the rest of the story.
After both songs were done, and Chris Brown discovered at the bar, it was time to declare a round two victor.
In a shocker that still no one can explain, Huck disqualified the Klit’s and declared the Taint’s the victors. Knotting the score at 1-1 with just the final round to go.
All three member’s of the Klit claim that Huck was simply confused and read off the wrong name for the team being disqualified, but that didn’t change the decision.
Next up was another intermission, then on to the finals.
Brown returned to the line-up for the final round, but he didn’t sound quite right as the Taint’s put on their worst performance of the night.
That would all be explained as the song ended, and Brown quickly turned heal and slipped into the Klit lineup.
He claimed he was betrayed and left alone at the bar, traded in for a cuter model in the second round even. He also claimed that he “just wanted to singe his third song.”
Either way, he put on his best vocals of the night and helped to lead the Klit to their best performance as a group.
All that was left was to crown a winner.
Neither fan that was left in the crowd cheered for the Taints, while they both went wild for the Klit. That left Huck no choice but to declare a clear victory for SATELLITE KLIT.
But wait, there was one last betrayal. Overlooked in the contract signed before the battle, it was an unsanctioned contest, leaving the world championship with FORBIDDEN TAINT, at least until the next battle.
Until next time friends, watch out for both the Satellite Klit and the Forbidden Taint, for they are each coming to a comic con near you!
