Detroit Derby Girls, Michigan’s premier female roller derby organization, hits the New Year at hyperspeed with its annual Star Wars-themed bout between its home teams the Grand Prix Madonnas and the Devil’s Night Dames on January 18, 2014.

To aid the Star Wars theme, there will be a reprise appearance by the 501st Great Lakes Garrison and Rebel Legion Great Lakes Baseas well as costume and trivia contests. Fans are encouraged to emb
race the spirit of the films and come early to take pictures with characters.

Heading into this bout Devil’s Night Dames have been taking their training up a notch since their close loss to the Pistolwhippers in November. The Grand Prix Madonnas, hot off a December victory over the Detroit Pistoffs, are eager to solidify their place at the top of the league standings for this home season.

Some may remember derby from when it was popular in the 70’s. As it has emerged in its current comeback, there is still plenty of entertainment, but it is much more competitive athletic sport than the theatrical version of the past. The Detroit Derby Girls league is comprised of five intra-league “home teams” and three inter league travel teams that compete at international, regional, and local levels; their international level team is presently the highest ranked team in Michigan at 28th in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rankings.
